DINED is an anthropometric database of body dimensions from Delft University of Technology. It provides measurements such as stature, reach and hand size for several populations, with percentiles, and tools to select the dimensions relevant to a design.
Design decisions based on a single average user fail for many people. Percentile data allows designing for a chosen share of the population, for example from the 5th to the 95th percentile.
A must for any ergonomic study, manufacturing bench or product design. Note that the datasets used are 5 to 20 years old.
Registration, free, is required to access most of the data. The student dataset can usually be used in several tools as demo of the tool without registration.
Ergonomists, designers and product developers use it to dimension handles, seats, workstations and controls. Mechanical engineers use it to set clearances and reach distances in machines and vehicles.
