From history to emerging frontiers

Published on 2026-09-15 by @MIT

Abstract: AbstractDiffusion MRI transformed brain imaging by making MRI sensitive not only to anatomy and spin-relaxation contrast, but also to micrometer-scale water displacements over diffusion times of a few tens of milliseconds. The resulting signal is exquisitely sensitive to tissue organization, because cell membranes, myelin, axonal packing, orientation dispersion, exchange, as well as perfusion-related incoherent fluid motion all modulate the displacement distribution sampled by diffusing water mo[...]

Our summary: Diffusion MRI revolutionized brain imaging by enabling detection of acute ischemia before conventional imaging. It allows for the exploration of white matter anisotropy through diffusion tensor imaging, aiding in understanding psychiatric disorders. Advances in technology have expanded its applications to brain development, neurodegeneration, and neurosurgery, emphasizing the importance of model assumptions in interpretation.

Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition Reverses Age-Related Pulmonary Decline and Increases Bronchus-Associated Lymphoid Tissue Formation in Aged Mice

Published on 2026-02-03 by Kyle Kenny, Ingrid R. Niesman, Kee S. Moon, Mark Sussman, Morgan K. Wright, Dylan Dawood, Joy A. Phillips @MDPI

Abstract: Age-related chronic, low-grade inflammation, known as inflammaging, contributes to tissue damage and disease. In the lungs, inflammaging leads to abnormal tissue remodeling, reduced function, and decreased immunity. A key factor in inflammaging is declining acetylcholine signaling, which normally suppresses inflammation and promotes tissue repair. We tested whether increasing acetylcholine responsiveness could reverse age-related lung damage. Aged mice were treated with donepezil to increase ace[...]

Our summary: Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase with donepezil reverses age-related lung damage in mice. Treatment improves blood oxygen saturation and voluntary activity while restoring alveolar structure. Increased bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue formation enhances respiratory immunity against infections.
