The Functional Unit in LCA

1997
  • International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

The functional unit is a critical concept in LCA that defines the quantified performance of a product system for use as a reference unit. It ensures that comparisons between different systems are made on a fair and equivalent basis. For example, when comparing paint, the functional unit might be ‘to protect 1 square meter of wall for 10 years’.

The functional unit is the cornerstone of any comparative Life-Cycle Assessment. Its primary purpose is to provide a reference to which all input and output data are normalized. Without a clearly defined and identical functional unit, comparing two products or services would be meaningless. For instance, comparing a disposable cup to a reusable cup requires a functional unit like ‘providing a vessel for 1,000 hot drinks’. This accounts for the fact that one reusable cup replaces many disposable ones. The definition must be precise and include aspects of performance, quantity, and duration. It answers the questions: ‘What function does the product provide?’, ‘How much of that function?’, ‘For how long?’, and ‘To what quality standard?’. A poorly defined functional unit can introduce significant bias into an LCA study, leading to misleading conclusions. It is established during the ‘Goal and Scope Definition’ phase and directly influences the system boundaries and the data collected in the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) phase.
