YTaO4/Y₂Zr₂O₇ Dual-Phase Ceramics with Enhanced Vickers Hardness, Fracture Toughness and High Thermal Expansion Properties for Thermal Barrier Coating Applications

Published on 2025-03-11 by Ziyang Ruan, Zifan Zhao, Jing Feng @MDPI

Abstract: Rare-earth tantalates (RETaO4) are considered as a type of emerging thermal barrier coating materials applied to the hot components of gas turbines and aerospace engines due to their excellent thermal stability, high-temperature fracture toughness, corrosion resistance and extremely low thermal conductivity. However, the relatively low hardness and thermal expansion coefficients may limit their service lifetime in a harsh engine environment. To address the current limitation of rare-earth tantal[...]

Our summary: Rare-earth tantalates (RETaO4) are excellent thermal barrier coating materials for gas turbines and aerospace engines. Introducing YTaO4/YZrO7 dual-phase ceramics significantly enhances mechanical and thermal properties, making them ideal for thermal barrier coating applications.

Strategies for Strontium Recovery/Elimination from Various Sources

Published on 2025-03-10 by Jose Ignacio Robla, Lorena Alcaraz, Francisco Jose Alguacil @MDPI

Abstract: Not having the same grade of popularity as other metals like rare earth elements, gold, copper, etc., strontium is a chemical element with wide uses in daily life, which is why it appears in the EU 2023 list of Critical Raw Materials. Among the sources (with celestine serving as the raw material) used to recover the element, the recycling of some Sr-bearing secondary wastes is under consideration, and it is also worth mentioning the interest in the removal of strontium from radioactive effluents[...]

Our summary: Strategies for recovering and eliminating strontium from various sources include utilizing diverse technologies such as adsorption, leaching, and liquid-liquid extraction for treating different solid or liquid wastes containing Sr(II) and common radionuclides. Adsorption and membrane technologies are effective for Sr-diluted solutions, while liquid-liquid extraction is more suitable for Sr-concentrated solutions.

Design of Wood-Based Gd (III)-Hemoporphyrin Monomethyl Ether Eco-Material for Optical Oxygen Sensing with a Wide Detection Range

Published on 2025-03-08 by Yujie Niu, Jinxin Wang, Zhongxing Zhang, Ting Liu @MDPI

Abstract: Gaseous oxygen detection is essential in numerous production and manufacturing sectors. To meet the varying oxygen detection requirements across different fields, techniques that offer a wide oxygen detection range should be developed. In this study, a wood-based oxygen sensing material was designed using balsa wood as the supporting matrix and gadolinium hemoporphyrin monomethyl ether (Gd-HMME) as the oxygen-sensitive indicator. The wood-based Gd-HMME exhibits a cellular porous structure, which[...]

Our summary: Design of wood-based Gd (III)-hemoporphyrin monomethyl ether eco-material for optical oxygen sensing with a wide detection range. Gaseous oxygen detection is essential in numerous production and manufacturing sectors. An automatic oxygen detection system was developed using LabVIEW for practical use, and the limit of detection was determined to be 0.01 kPa.

Fabrication of Radiopaque, Drug-Loaded Resorbable Polymer for Medical Device Development

Published on 2025-03-07 by Sophie T. Melancon, Erin Marie San Valentin, Dominic Karl M. Bolinas, Marvin R. Bernardino, Archana Mishra, Gino Canlas, Gouthami Chintalapani, Megan C. Jacobsen, Allan John R. Barcena, Steven Y. Huang @MDPI

Abstract: Resorbable medical devices provide temporary functionality before degrading into safe byproducts. One application is absorbable inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs), which prevent pulmonary embolism in high-risk patients with contraindications to anticoagulants. However, current absorbable IVCFs are limited by radiolucency and local clot formation risks. This study aimed to develop radiopaque, drug-loaded resorbable IVCFs with enhanced imaging and therapeutic capabilities. Poly-p-dioxanone (PPDO) [...]

Our summary: Development of radiopaque, drug-loaded resorbable IVCFs with enhanced imaging and therapeutic capabilities for preventing pulmonary embolism in high-risk patients. Enhanced radiopacity and anti-thrombotic potential without compromising mechanical strength or safety.

Supplementation with Rare Earth–Chitosan Chelate Improves Tibia Quality, Disease Resistance Capacity, and Performance in Nursery Pigs

Published on 2025-03-07 by Shaobin Hao, Wenchen Sun, Panting Wei, Huadong Wu, Wei Lu, Yuyong He @MDPI

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on the tibia, liver, and gut, and on performance, when supplementing nursery pigs with different levels of rare earth–chitosan chelate (RECC). A total of 80 piglets, weaned at 7.67 ± 0.09 kg, were randomly assigned to groups RECC0 (RECC, 0 mg/kg diet), RECC200 (RECC, 200 mg/kg diet), RECC400 (RECC, 400 mg/kg diet), and RECC600 (RECC, 600 mg/kg diet), with four replicates in each group and five pigs per replicate du[...]

Effects of a Welding Wire Containing Er or Sc on the Microstructure, Mechanical Properties, and Corrosion Resistance of the 5xxx Aluminum Alloy MIG Joint

Published on 2025-03-06 by Cunwei Zou, Ruizhi Wu, Xinhe Yang, Zhikun Ma, Legan Hou @MDPI

Abstract: The development of MIG (metal inert gas) welding for five-series aluminum alloys primarily involves the improvement and optimization of welding processes. Building upon research findings regarding the enhancement of aluminum alloy properties through the use of scandium (Sc) and erbium (Er), our study incorporates Sc and Er into the welding wire to examine their impact on welding quality. The results show that the introduction of Er and Sc results in grain refinement from 47 µm to 2[...]
