The Shockley–Queisser limit is the maximum theoretical efficiency for a single p-n junction solar cell. It considers only radiative recombination and black-body radiation losses. For a single-junction cell with an optimal bandgap of 1.34 eV under standard solar illumination (AM1.5G), the maximum efficiency is approximately 33.7%. This fundamental limit guides solar cell research and design.

Developed by French engineer Pierre Bézier for Renault in the 1960s, UNISURF was one of the first true 3D CAD/CAM systems. Its core innovation was the use of what are now known as Bézier curves and surfaces. These are parametric curves defined by a set of control points, allowing for the intuitive and mathematical creation of complex freeform shapes for car bodies.

The Quantum Size Effect describes the phenomenon where the electronic and optical properties of a material change as its size approaches the nanoscale. When the dimensions of a material become comparable to the electron's de Broglie wavelength, quantum confinement occurs. This quantizes the electron energy levels, leading to a size-dependent band gap, \(E_g(R) \approx E_{g,\b\u\lk} + \frac{\hbar^2\pi^2}{2R^2}(\frac{1}{m_e^*} + \frac{1}{m_h^*})\).

Molecular self-assembly is a 'bottom-up' process where molecules spontaneously organize into ordered structures without external guidance. This phenomenon, driven by non-covalent interactions like hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic effects, and van der Waals forces, is fundamental in biology (e.g., protein folding, lipid bilayer formation). In biomaterials, it is harnessed to create complex, nanostructured materials like hydrogels and nanofibers for biomedical applications.

The ISO 5725 standard defines accuracy as the combination of trueness and precision. Trueness is the closeness of the mean of a large series of measurements to the accepted reference value, quantifying systematic error or bias. Precision is the closeness of agreement among a set of results, quantifying random error. Thus, accuracy requires both high trueness and high precision.

CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) is the dominant technology for constructing integrated circuits. It uses complementary pairs of p-type and n-type MOSFETs to build logic gates. Its primary advantage is very low static power consumption, as one transistor in the pair is always off during steady state, resulting in minimal current flow except during switching transitions.

Top-down synthesis involves creating nanomaterials by starting with a larger, bulk material and breaking it down or patterning it to the nanoscale. Key techniques include mechanical methods like ball milling and lithographic methods like photolithography, electron-beam lithography, and nanoimprint lithography. These methods are often used for creating structured surfaces and integrated circuits, but can suffer from surface imperfections.

Molecular electronics explores using individual molecules or nanoscale molecular collections as fundamental electronic components. This approach aims to build circuits at the ultimate limit of miniaturization, far beyond traditional silicon-based technology. Key components include molecular wires, switches, and rectifiers, leveraging quantum mechanical properties like electron tunneling through molecular orbitals for their function.

Lithium-ion batteries function via an intercalation mechanism, a reversible insertion of ions into a layered host material. During discharge, lithium ions (\(Li^+\)) de-intercalate from a negative electrode (anode), typically graphite, and move through a non-aqueous electrolyte to intercalate into a positive electrode (cathode), typically a metal oxide. Electrons travel through the external circuit, creating current.

A Single-Electron Transistor (SET) is a switching device that uses controlled electron tunneling to manipulate the flow of single electrons. It consists of a quantum dot (the 'island') coupled to source and drain leads via tunnel junctions, and capacitively coupled to a gate electrode. Its operation relies on the Coulomb blockade effect, enabling extreme sensitivity and low power consumption.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are cylindrical molecules of rolled-up sheets of single-layer carbon atoms (graphene). They can be single-walled (SWCNTs) or multi-walled (MWCNTs). Their properties are extraordinary, including exceptional tensile strength (~100 GPa), high electrical conductivity, and high thermal conductivity. Their electronic behavior (metallic or semiconducting) depends on their chirality, i.e., the angle of the graphene lattice roll-up.

General relativity predicts that accelerating masses generate ripples in the fabric of spacetime called gravitational waves. These waves propagate outwards at the speed of light, carrying energy as gravitational radiation. They are created by cataclysmic cosmic events like the merger of black holes or neutron stars, causing spacetime to stretch and squeeze as they pass.
