The Substitution of Natural Gas with Biomethane in an Industrial Fluidized Bed Sand Drying Process

Published on 2025-03-11 by Mnica Valria dos Santos Machado, Joo Andrade de Carvalho, Ivonete vila, Andreas Nascimento, Felipe Solferini de Carvalho @MDPI

Abstract: Drying sand using a fluidized bed process is very common in the industries that use the material in their processes. The fluidized bed system works by introducing gas and excess air into a bed to achieve the temperature required to dry the particulate material. This system is used in various industrial processes, including gasification, pyrolysis, grain drying and industrial sand. The main objective of this research was to analyze the sand drying system used in an industrial process with a fluid[...]

Our summary: Analysis of substituting natural gas with biomethane in an industrial sand drying process using a fluidized bed. Good agreement between mathematical model and real industrial data. Gases are interchangeable with a difference in Wobbe indices.

A Case Study from an Informal Settlement

Published on 2025-03-11 by Ilaria Proietti, Irmgard Jordan, Teresa Borelli @MDPI

Abstract: Neglected and Underutilized Species (NUS)—locally available, climate-resilient species—possess significant nutritional, social, and environmental benefits, yet their use, research focus, and market presence have diminished over time. Incorporating NUS into school meal programs can potentially boost childhood nutrition, promote healthy eating, encourage sustainable food production, preserve food culture and heritage, and support biodiversity conservation. School meals [...]

Our summary: A case study demonstrates the benefits of incorporating Neglected and Underutilized Species into school meal programs in an informal settlement in Nairobi, resulting in better nutrition for school-age children. Using the School Meal Planner PLUS software, nutrient-dense foods were optimized to meet daily nutrient needs at affordable prices, showcasing the effectiveness of linear programming in efficient school feeding program planning. Future research should explore broader aspects such as environmental impacts and direct procurement opportunities.

Green Synthesis, Characterization, and Optimization of Chitosan Nanoparticles Using Blumea balsamifera Extract

Published on 2025-03-10 by Johann Dominic A. Villarta, Fernan Joseph C. Paylago, Janne Camille H. Poldo, Jalen Stephen R. Santos, Tricia Anne Marie M. Escordial, Charlimagne M. Montealegre @MDPI

Abstract: Chitosan nanoparticles are nontoxic polymers with diverse biomedical applications. Traditional nanoparticle synthesis often involves harmful chemicals or results in reduced desirable properties, sparking interest in green synthesis methods for nanoparticle production. Utilizing plant-based phytochemicals as reducing and capping agents offers advantages like biocompatibility, sustainability, and safety. This study explored Blumea balsamifera leaf extract for chitosan nanoparticle (CNP) synthesis.[...]

Our summary: This study explores the use of Blumea balsamifera extract for the green synthesis of chitosan nanoparticles, which are characterized using DLS and SEM. Optimization of the synthesis process is achieved through UV-Vis analysis and FCCCD, with promising antibacterial applications against E. coli.

Mathematical Modeling and Biomechanical Analysis of a Derotation Plate for Treating Complex Hip Dysplasia

Published on 2025-03-10 by Durdana Oktyabrova, Kairat Ashimov, Berk Guclu, Mukhtar Abilmazhinov, Boris Gorbunov, Ramazanov Zhanatay, Timur Baidalin, Bekzhan Suleimenov, Askar Beknazarov, Bagdat Azamatov, Nail Beisekenov @MDPI

Abstract: Developmental dysplasia of the hip, particularly Crowe type IV, presents significant challenges in orthopedic surgery due to severe anatomical deformities and biomechanical instability. This study focuses on evaluating the biomechanical performance of a prosthesis–femur–derotation plate system designed to address these challenges. Using FEA, a comprehensive assessment of stress distribution, displacement, and safety factors was conducted under physiological loading co[...]

Our summary: Evaluation of a derotation plate system for treating severe hip dysplasia, using FEA to assess stress distribution and displacement, demonstrating effectiveness in stabilizing the femur and restoring limb axis, with promising biomechanical properties for improved surgical outcomes.

A Study of Land Use and Ecological Changes to Vegetation Around the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park

Published on 2025-03-10 by Huimei Xia, Wei Wang, Zijian Zhang @MDPI

Abstract: Global ecosystems, particularly in biodiversity-rich tropical rainforests, are increasingly under pressure from human activities. As socio-economic development continues and populations steadily grow, the effective planning of areas surrounding national parks has become a global challenge. This study, based on remote sensing data and utilizing landscape ecology tools, such as ArcGIS 10.8, GeoDa 1.20, and Fragstats 4.2, combines spatial statistical methods, trend analysis, and the Hurst index to [...]

A Case Study of İzmir

Published on 2025-03-10 by Nurdan Erdo?an @MDPI

Abstract: Understanding the impacts of land use/land cover (LULC) changes on ecological processes is essential for addressing biodiversity loss, habitat fragmentation, and climate change. This study analyzes the effects of LULC changes on habitat quality and landscape connectivity in İzmir, Turkey’s third-largest city, using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs Habitat Quality (InVEST HQ) model, Conefor 2.6 connectivity analysis, and Circuitscape 4.0 res[...]

Our summary: Understanding LULC impacts on habitat quality and connectivity in İzmir, Turkey using InVEST HQ, Conefor 2.6, and Circuitscape 4.0 models. Analysis of CORINE Land Cover data from 1990 to 2018 shows increasing artificial surfaces, stable high-quality habitat areas, and intensified fragmentation. Connectivity analysis identifies critical ecological corridors, but resistance to movement hinders connectivity-supporting corridors. Integration of spatial modeling in urban planning and conservation strategies is crucial to mitigate habitat loss and fragmentation.
