Wrocław University of Science and Technology (WUST)

Wrocław University of Science and Technology (WUST)
Address: Wybrzeże Stanisława Wyspiańskiego 27, 50-370 Wrocław, Dolnośląskie, Poland
Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering

Founded in 1945 (with traditions from Lviv Polytechnic), WUST is one of the largest and best technical universities in Poland, offering a wide range of engineering and science programs.

Wrocław University of Science and Technology, WUST, was established in 1945 in a city that had been German Breslau until the end of the Second World War. The Polish professors who founded it came largely from Lviv Polytechnic, which had been closed after the Soviet takeover of Lviv, and they brought traditions, books and equipment with them. It has about 26,000 students and 4,000 staff. The campus lies along the Oder river, with the Main Building from 1910 on Wybrzeże Wyspiańskiego.

The university has around a dozen faculties, covering architecture, civil engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, electronics, photonics and microsystems, computer science and telecommunications, mechanical engineering, geoengineering and mining, environmental engineering, fundamental problems of technology and pure mathematics. Computer science, telecommunications and electronics are among the strongest fields, with large numbers of graduates joining the software and electronics firms of Lower Silesia.

Wrocław hosts research centres in photonics, optoelectronics and materials science, and WUST takes part in the EIT consortium and in projects with the technology cluster formed by firms such as Intel, Google and Nokia, which have set up offices in the city. The university works with the Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and the neighbouring University of Wrocław on biotechnology and medicine, and it has a long tradition in mining and geoengineering.

Public universities in Poland teach full-time studies in Polish without tuition for Polish citizens, while programmes in English and studies for foreign students are normally paid, and fees vary by programme. Check the current tariff. Polish applicants use the national online recruitment system with results from the secondary school exam, and international students apply through the university’s own portal. Scholarships are available through national agencies.

Wrocław was a European Capital of Culture in 2016. It is a lively, affordable city with several student areas and a large number of IT employers, and the university runs dormitories close to the campus.

Most Similar Schools Locally

  • Also strong in metrology, aerospace and transportations, Warsaw University of Technology makes a sensible second look at home; it is slightly larger, at about 32,000 students against roughly 26,000 here, and is also a public institution.
  • AGH University of Science and Technology sits close to this institution on metrology, aerospace and transportations; it teaches at the same levels, namely bachelor's, master's and doctoral, and covers sound engineering and marine science as well.
  • Silesian University of Technology is the closest domestic counterpart for metrology, aerospace and transportations; it is also a public institution, and runs the same bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes.
  • Poznań University of Technology is the closest domestic counterpart for metrology, aerospace and transportations; it is smaller, enrolling about 16,000 students against roughly 26,000 here, and is also a public institution.
  • Where this university leans on bioinformatics, nanotechnologies and optics, University of Wrocław does the same, and it has almost the same size, at about 25,000 students, and is also a public institution.

Most Similar Schools Abroad

  • On content, Technische Universität Darmstadt in Germany and this university are close, as both teach metrology, aerospace and transportations; it is also a public institution, and teaches at the same levels, namely bachelor's, master's and doctoral.
  • Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich in Switzerland is the nearest foreign match on metrology, aerospace and quality; it covers astroscience and food science as well, and has almost the same size, at about 24,500 students.
  • Huazhong University of Science and Technology offers an international parallel to this institution, with aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics as common ground; it covers microbiology and genetics as well, and is larger, enrolling about 58,000 students against roughly 26,000 here.
  • Seen from abroad, Harbin Institute of Technology (China) is a close relative on subject matter, since aerospace, transportations and quality are central to both, and it is slightly larger, at about 35,000 students against roughly 26,000 here, and is also a public institution.
  • Technische Universität Berlin in Germany pursues a similar profile in aerospace, transportations and quality, and it is also a public institution, and runs the same bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes.

*: without any judgment of the quality, readers are strongly encouraged to check the official status of the exact diploma envisioned as many universities have a mix of recognized diplomas, not recognized, “co-delivered,” “equivalent to”,  “some pathways” (…), can change over time, and can be named differently from one country to another.

**: international reputation: is based on some criteria that do not mean much in some domains or specialties (number of researchers, of scientific publications, on budget ….). Our approximate 1-4 scale:

  1. known locally
  2. known locally and internationally
  3. is listed in some of the world university’s classifications
  4. is listed among the 20 firsts in some of world university’s classifications
