Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST)

Address: 1037 Luoyu Road, Hongshan District, 430074 Wuhan, Hubei, China
Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science

HUST is a comprehensive public research university formed in 2000 from the merger of three institutions. It is known for its strong programs in engineering, medicine, and sciences.

HUST, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is one of the largest universities in central China, with about 58,000 students and 3,500 staff. It was formed in 2000 by combining three institutions: Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and the Wuhan Urban Construction Institute. The main campus on Luoyu Road in the Hongshan district of Wuhan is large and wooded, and the university hospital sits in the city centre.

Tongji Medical College is the oldest part of the medical side, tracing its origin to a German-founded medical school opened in Shanghai in 1907. On the engineering side, HUST is known for mechanical engineering, optical engineering and computer science. Wuhan calls its eastern district Optics Valley, the largest centre for optical fibre and laser production in China, and the university supplies the district with researchers and graduates.

The Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics is the flagship research unit. Other research topics include advanced manufacturing and robotics, photonics and optical communication, artificial intelligence and big data, energy science and biomedical engineering. Cooperation with industry in central China is strong, and companies in the optical, automotive and electric power sectors sponsor laboratories and chairs.

Teaching is mainly in Chinese, with English-taught master’s and doctoral programmes. Chinese students are admitted through the gaokao, and international applicants apply directly and may need HSK certificates. Tuition for international students is higher than for Chinese citizens, and the Chinese Government Scholarship and university scholarships are available.

Wuhan is a large inland city on the Yangtze, with lower living costs than the coastal metropolises and a very large student population. About 220,000 people have graduated from HUST, and its engineers are well represented in telecommunications, manufacturing and energy companies across China.

  • Xi'an Jiaotong University takes a similar route through aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics, and it is also a public institution, and teaches at the same levels, namely bachelor's, master's and doctoral.
  • On content, Zhejiang University and this institution are close, as both teach aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics; it is also a public institution, and runs the same bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes.
  • The comparison with Harbin Institute of Technology is straightforward on subjects, since both focus on aerospace, transportations and nanotechnologies, and it runs the same bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes, and covers quality as well.
  • For students who like the aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics focus of this university but want another option nearby, Tsinghua fits well: it is slightly smaller, at about 50,000 students against roughly 58,000 here, and is also a public institution.
  • Another national school that puts aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics at the centre is SJTU, and it is slightly smaller, at about 40,000 students against roughly 58,000 here, and is also a public institution.

Most Similar Schools Abroad

  • In Germany, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen teaches much the same core subjects, aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics, and it is slightly smaller, at about 47,000 students against roughly 58,000 here, and is also a public institution.
  • Abroad, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany) covers aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics in a comparable way, and it runs the same bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes, and covers food science and geotechnics as well.
  • Wrocław University of Science and Technology in Poland shares the aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics orientation of this university, and it covers metrology and quality as well, and is smaller, enrolling about 26,000 students against roughly 58,000 here.
  • Osaka University in Japan is the nearest foreign match on aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics; it is also a public institution, and runs the same bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes.
  • Warsaw University of Technology (Poland) works on the same fields as this institution, chiefly aerospace, transportations and bioinformatics; it covers metrology and quality as well, and is smaller, enrolling about 32,000 students against roughly 58,000 here.

*: without any judgment of the quality, readers are strongly encouraged to check the official status of the exact diploma envisioned as many universities have a mix of recognized diplomas, not recognized, “co-delivered,” “equivalent to”,  “some pathways” (…), can change over time, and can be named differently from one country to another.

**: international reputation: is based on some criteria that do not mean much in some domains or specialties (number of researchers, of scientific publications, on budget ….). Our approximate 1-4 scale:

  1. known locally
  2. known locally and internationally
  3. is listed in some of the world university’s classifications
  4. is listed among the 20 firsts in some of world university’s classifications

***: estimated numbers, based on online sources and/or feedbacks. The numbers can vary greatly depending on school organisation (ex.: school is part of a group, it employs internal staff or external consultants or has public staff without employing them …).
