DMAIC is a data-driven improvement cycle used for improving, optimizing, and stabilizing business processes. The acronym stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. It is the core tool used to drive Six Sigma projects. Each phase has specific tasks and utilizes various statistical tools to identify root causes of problems and implement sustainable solutions.

The DMAIC methodology provides a structured, five-phase framework for process improvement. The ‘Define’ phase involves clearly articulating the business problem, goals, scope, and identifying the customer and their requirements. The ‘Measure’ phase focuses on collecting data to establish a baseline for process performance and quantify the problem. Key metrics are identified and a data collection plan is executed. In the ‘Analyze’ phase, the collected data is analyzed to identify and verify the root cause(s) of the problem. This often involves statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, and process mapping. The ‘Improve’ phase is where potential solutions are developed, tested, and implemented to address the identified root causes. Techniques like Design of Experiments (DOE) are often used here. Finally, the ‘Control’ phase aims to sustain the gains achieved. This involves implementing monitoring systems, updating standard operating procedures, and creating response plans to ensure the process remains at its improved performance level. This cyclical approach is a refinement of earlier quality improvement cycles like the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle.
