The PDCA cycle, also known as the Deming Cycle or Shewhart Cycle, is an iterative four-step management method used for the control and continuous improvement of processes and products. It provides a simple and effective approach for solving problems and managing change, ensuring that ideas are tested on a small scale before being implemented organization-wide.
PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) Cycle
- Walter A. Shewhart
- W. Edwards Deming
The PDCA cycle is a systematic series of steps for gaining valuable learning and knowledge for the continual improvement of a product, process, or service. The ‘Plan’ phase involves identifying an opportunity or a problem and planning a change. This includes analyzing the current state, setting goals, and developing a theory on how to achieve them. The ‘Do’ phase is where the plan is executed, typically on a small scale or as a pilot project. This allows for testing the proposed change without disrupting the entire system. Data is collected during this phase to measure the impact of the change.
In the ‘Check’ (or ‘Study’) phase, the results from the ‘Do’ phase are evaluated against the expected outcomes defined in the ‘Plan’ phase. This involves analyzing the collected data to see if the change worked as intended and what was learned. Finally, the ‘Act’ phase is where the knowledge gained is used to make a decision. If the change was successful, it is implemented on a wider scale. If not, the cycle begins again with a new plan based on the lessons learned. This cyclical nature makes PDCA a powerful engine for continuous improvement and organizational learning.
