ISO 9001 Quality Management System Standard

1987-03
  • Organisation internationale de normalisation (ISO)

ISO 9001 is the world’s most recognized standard for Quality Management Systems (QMS). It provides a cadre and a set of principles that ensure a common-sense approach to the management of an organization to consistently satisfy customers and other stakeholders. It is based on seven quality management principles, including a strong customer focus and a process-based approach.

ISO 9001 is part of the ISO 9000 family of normes. While ISO 9000 defines the fundamental concepts and vocabulary, ISO 9001 specifies the requirements for a QMS that an organization must fulfill to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. The standard is generic and intended to be applicable to any organization, regardless of its type or size, or the products and services it provides.

The structure of ISO 9001 is based on a high-level structure (HLS) which provides a common framework for all ISO management system standards, making it easier for organizations to integrate their QMS with other management systems, such as environmental management (ISO 14001). The standard requires organizations to define their processes, document them, monitor their effectiveness, and continually improve them. Key clauses cover the context of the organization, leadership commitment, planning (including risk-based thinking), support (resources, competence, communication), operation, performance evaluation, and improvement. Certification to ISO 9001 by an accredited body is often a prerequisite for business-to-business transactions.
