Looking for Synergies from a Bibliometric Study

Published on 2025-03-10 by Rodrigo Estvez, Esteban Quijada-Maldonado, Julio Romero, Ricardo Abejn @MDPI

Abstract: Additive manufacturing must be highlighted as an innovative technology with the capacity to produce objects with complex and customized geometries using a diverse range of raw materials. Despite its significant potential, research compiling and evaluating the specific contributions of additive manufacturing in the field of chemical engineering was scarce in both quantitative and qualitative terms. Similarly, the application of chemical engineering tools to additive manufacturing has not been spe[...]

Our summary: Comprehensive bibliometric study on the synergies between additive manufacturing and chemical engineering, highlighting the potential contributions and research gaps in the field. Exponential growth in publications, thematic distribution, and main topics identified through keyword analysis and network analysis using SciMAT software. Opportunities for process intensification and sustainability through the integration of chemical engineering tools in additive manufacturing.

The Role of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Experimental Investigation

Published on 2025-03-09 by Behrouz Pirouz, Hana Javadi Nejad, Anna Selene Chirillo, Seyed Navid Naghib, Patrizia Piro @MDPI

Abstract: The growing use of microfluidic-based devices necessitates an analysis of flow characteristics through both experimental methods and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. CFD simulations facilitate the investigation of various devices, including medical sensors, by providing detailed insights into flow behavior. In this study, we conducted experimental and CFD analysis of the microfluidic flow in three devices: a COVID-19 rapid test kit, a blood glucose kit, and a PDMS kit. Our findings[...]

Our summary: The study explores the flow characteristics of microfluidic devices through experimental methods and CFD simulations, revealing the impact of wall adhesion on flow speed predictions. Hemodynamic analysis of blood glucose and PDMS kits highlights the importance of microchannel diameter on flow speed. CFD results emphasize the role of porosity, surface tension coefficients, and contact angles in optimizing sensor development.

Thermophysical and Tribological Properties

Published on 2025-03-08 by Jos M. Lieira del Ro, Alonso Alba, Martn Gmez Martnez, Alfredo Amigo, Josefa Fernndez @MDPI

Abstract: The aim of this research is to analyze the thermophysical, wettability, and tribological properties of some base oils of different nature (synthetic and mineral), as well as of formulated oils, to find potential transmission oils for electrical vehicles. Regarding the thermophysical properties, viscosity, density, and viscosity index were analyzed. Surface tension and contact angle were also measured to obtain the wettability performance of tested lubricants. The highest viscosities were found f[...]

Our summary: The research analyzes thermophysical, wettability, and tribological properties of base oils for potential transmission oils for electric vehicles. Viscosity, density, and viscosity index were studied, along with surface tension and contact angle for wettability performance. The lowest coefficients of friction and wear were found in formulated lubricants with additive packages.

The Influence of Sample Microfabrication and Annealing on the Mechanical Strain–Stress Behavior of Stainless Steels and Corrosion Resistant Aluminum Alloys in Micro-Tensile Tests

Published on 2025-03-06 by Janko Auerswald, Joel Tenisch, Christoph Fallegger, Markus Seifert @MDPI

Abstract: Miniaturized components for enhanced integrated functionality or thin sheets for lightweight applications often consist of face-centered cubic metals. They exhibit good strength, corrosion resistance, formability and recyclability. Microfabrication technologies, however, may introduce cold work or detrimental heat-induced lattice defects into the material, with consequences for the mechanical properties. Austenitic stainless steels (1.4310, 1.4301) and aluminum alloys (EN AW-5005-H24, EN AW-6082[...]

Our summary: The study investigates the impact of sample microfabrication and annealing on the mechanical behavior of stainless steels and aluminum alloys in micro-tensile tests, revealing the formation of shear band zones in certain materials and the influence of cutting methods on deformation.

Burst Ultrafast Laser Welding of Quartz Glass

Published on 2025-03-06 by Xianshi Jia, Yinzhi Fu, Kai Li, Chengaonan Wang, Zhou Li, Cong Wang, Jian Duan @MDPI

Abstract: Ultrafast laser welding of transparent materials has been widely used in sensors, microfluidics, optics, etc. However, the existing ultrafast laser welding depths are limited by the short laser Rayleigh length, which makes it difficult to realize the joining of transparent materials in the millimeter depth range and becomes a new challenge. Based on temporal shaping, we realized Burst mode ultrafast laser output with different sub-pulse numbers and explored the effect of different Burst modes on[...]

Our summary: Burst mode ultrafast laser welding of quartz glass with depths up to 5 mm is achieved through temporal shaping. The welding strength can exceed 18.18 MPa, providing a new method for joining large-size transparent materials.

Isolation and expansion of natural killer cells using fluorescence-activated droplet sorting

Patent published on the 2025-03-06 in WO under Ref WO2025050133 by NORTHEASTERN UNIV [US] (Konry Tania [us], Estevam Jose [us], White Rachel [us])

Abstract: A high-throughput microfluidics-based fluorescence activated droplet sorting (FADS) system provides activation, sorting, and feeder cell-free expansion of NK cells that are enriched for killing activity. The NK cells are activated and identified based on their ability to kill target cells, such as tumor cells, without prior sensitization. The diversity of endogenous NK cells can be overcome to allow selection of a highly effective population of cells for therapeutic use, such as in the treatment[...]

Our summary: High-throughput FADS system for isolation and expansion of NK cells with killing activity, selection of effective NK cell population for cancer treatment, activation and identification of NK cells based on killing ability.
