Desalinizzazione
La tecnologia di desalinizzazione trasforma l'acqua di mare in acqua dolce per far fronte alla scarsità idrica globale.

La desalinizzazione è la disciplina industriale e ingegneristica che si occupa di rimuovere i sali e i minerali disciolti dall'acqua di mare o dalle acque sotterranee salmastre per produrre acqua dolce potabile o adatta all'irrigazione, e che attualmente rifornisce oltre 100 milioni di persone nelle regioni a rischio idrico del Medio Oriente, del Nord Africa, delle zone costiere dell'Asia e, in misura crescente, dell'Europa meridionale e delle Americhe.

Inverso osmosi (RO) domina l'attuale capacità installata, spingendo l'acqua di alimentazione salina ad alta pressione attraverso membrane composite di poliammide a film sottile la cui selettività, resistenza all'incrostazione e tassi di rigetto del boro rimangono fronti di ricerca attivi nella scienza dei materiali; i processi termici - distillazione flash multistadio e distillazione multi-effetto - mantengono la rilevanza laddove il calore di scarto della produzione di energia è disponibile come input energetico gratuito.
