The UKNI Marking for Northern Ireland

UKNI marking on product packaging indicating compliance for Northern Ireland market.

The UKNI marking is a specific conformity mark for products placed on the market in Northern Ireland (NI). It is not a standalone mark; it must always accompany an EU conformity marking, such as the CE mark. It is required if a product needs mandatory third-party conformity assessment and that assessment is conducted by a UK-based body. It signals this fact to regulators.

The UKNI marking, sometimes referred to as the UK(NI) mark, is a unique outcome of the Northern Ireland Protocol. Its existence is necessary because while Northern Ireland remains part of the UK’s customs territory, it aligns with EU regulations for goods to prevent a hard border with the Republic of Ireland. This creates a dual-market situation.

A product sold in Northern Ireland must bear the CE mark. If a manufacturer chooses to use a conformity assessment body based in the EU to conduct a mandatory third-party assessment, only the CE mark is needed. However, if the manufacturer uses a body based in the United Kingdom (i.e., in Great Britain) for that same assessment, the product must be marked with both the CE mark and the UKNI mark. The UKNI mark essentially signifies that the CE compliance has been verified by a UK body. Products bearing the CE and UKNI marking can be sold in Northern Ireland but cannot be sold in the EU/EEA, as EU authorities do not recognise assessments from UK-based bodies.
