C2C Models: Integrated Marketplaces vs. Classifieds

1995

The C2C model has two primary implementations: online marketplaces and classifieds. Marketplaces, like eBay, are highly integrated, providing payment processing, structured listings, and reputation systems. They are active intermediaries. In contrast, classifieds platforms, like Craigslist, act more as simple connectors, providing a venue for listings but typically leaving the payment and transaction logistics entirely up to the users themselves.

The distinction between these two models lies in the level of platform involvement. An integrated marketplace takes a hands-on approach. It structures the entire user experience, from browsing and bidding to payment and feedback. This structure provides a higher degree of security and convenience for users, as the platform manages the financial aspect and offers dispute resolution. This involvement allows the platform to easily charge transaction fees, as it is a direct part of the value exchange.

Classifieds platforms adopt a laissez-faire approach. Their primary function is to publish user-generated advertisements and provide a means of contact. Transactions, payments, and delivery are arranged privately between the buyer and seller, often taking place offline and in-person. This model offers greater flexibility and anonymity but carries higher risks of fraud and disputes, as the platform offers minimal protection. Consequently, their revenue often comes from listing fees in specific high-demand categories rather than a percentage of every transaction.
