Metal–Support Interactions in Single-Atom Catalysts for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Published on 2026-01-13 by Alexandra Mansilla-Roux, Mayra Anabel Lara-Angulo, Juan Carlos Serrano-Ruiz @MDPI

Abstract: Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) is a promising route to transform a major greenhouse gas into value-added fuels and chemicals. However, its deployment is still hindered by the sluggish activation of CO2, poor selectivity toward multielectron products, and competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as powerful materials to address these challenges because they combine maximal metal utilization with well-defined coordination environments[...]

Our summary: This minireview discusses the role of single-atom catalysts (SACs) in enhancing electrochemical CO2 reduction efficiency. It highlights how metal-support interactions influence the adsorption and conversion of CO2RR intermediates. The review also addresses design strategies and future directions for improving SAC performance in industrial applications.

Green Mechanochemical Synthesis of Binary and Ternary Cadmium Chalcogenides with Tunable Band Gaps

Published on 2025-11-15 by Matja Kristl, Nea Zanjkovi?, Jona Kunej, Sao Gyergyek, Janja Stergar @MDPI

Abstract: In this work, we report on the mechanochemical preparation and characterization of binary (CdS, CdSe, and CdTe) and ternary (CdS0.5Se0.5, CdS0.5Te0.5, and CdSe0.5Te0.5) cadmium chalcogenides. The compounds were synthesized in a planetary micro mill using a zirconia grinding bowl and zirconia grinding balls. The products were examined by powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV&n[...]

Our summary: This study presents the mechanochemical synthesis of binary and ternary cadmium chalcogenides. Characterization techniques confirm the formation of nanoparticles with tunable band gaps suitable for semiconducting applications. The method is environmentally friendly, avoiding solvents and toxic precursors.
