
Nowadays, there is no physical product design or innovation without a CAD system: it enables accurate digital representation of the product geometry, allowing manipulation of designs with precise measurements and modifications that manual drafting cannot achieve. Product specifications, tolerance analyses, and simulations are directly integrated into the CAD platforms, supporting rapid iterations. Manufacturing equipment, such as CNC machines and 3D printers, also depends on CAD-generated files for production, making CAD systems an essential link from concept to finished product.
As a side note: no, wood industry, custom handcrafted musical instruments & luthiers, pottery or ceramics, and sometimes food and cardboard packaging … may still not need CAD systems

Who remembers the first Pro/E and the introduction of parametric CAD on MS Windows ? Coming from Catia on Unix, this was a revolution. Using a CAD software like you would use your word processor. And make any upstream modification and not loosing all the work done after in the hierarchy! These relationships among geometric features were defined by parameters and rules, allowing automatic updates across the model when modifications to dimensions or constraints were made. Changes to a part or assembly would propagate throughout related features, reducing manual editing and error rates in revisions.
Nowadays parametric CAD supports integration with analysis, simulation, and manufacturing workflows, allowing a more seamless transition from concept to production.
