Design Guide for Hybrid-Additive Manufacturing of Inconel 718 Combining PBF-LB/M and In Situ High-Speed Milling

Published on 2025-03-10 by David Sommer, Simon Hornung, Cemal Esen, Ralf Hellmann @MDPI

Abstract: As the correlation between design rules and process limitations is of the upmost importance for the full exploitation of any manufacturing technology, we report a design guide for hybrid-additive manufacturing of Inconel 718. Basic limitations need to be evaluated for this particular hybrid approach that combines laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) and in situ high-speed milling. Fundamental geometric limitations are examined with regard to the minimum feasible wall thickness, cylinders, overhang[...]

Characterization and Modelling of Biomimetic Bone Through Additive Manufacturing

Published on 2025-03-10 by Niranjan Srinivasan, Mohsen Barmouz, Bahman Azarhoushang @MDPI

Abstract: The long-term success of bone implant scaffolds depends on numerous factors, such as their porosity, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. These properties depend on the type of material, such as metals and their alloys or ceramics, and the procedure used to create the scaffolds. This study aims to find the biomimetic properties of aluminum 6061 (Al 6061) alloy through Digital Light Processing (DLP) and sintering. Hollow cylindrical Al 6061 samples are printed through the DLP process at 9[...]

Use of Biobased Resins Derived from Renewable Monomers for Sustainable 3D Fabrication Through Two-Photon Polymerization

Published on 2025-03-10 by Francisco Gontad, Jaime Cuartero, Sara Vidal, Nerea Otero, Natalia M. Schulz, Tobias Robert @MDPI

Abstract: This work demonstrates the fabrication of microstructures with formulations containing bio-based prepolymers derived from itaconic acid, commercial reactive diluents, photo initiators, and inhibitors, through two-photon polymerization. Lateral and vertical resolutions within the micron range can be achieved by the adjustment of laser scanning speed and pulse energy, and through the use of microscope objectives with high magnification and numerical aperture. The fabrication throughput can be slig[...]

Machine Learning-Assisted Hardness Prediction of Dispersion-Strengthened Tungsten Alloy

Published on 2025-03-07 by Shaowu Dai, Chong Chen, Cong Zhang, Shizhong Wei, Beibei Han, Changji Wang, Kunming Pan, Liujie Xu, Feng Mao, Hua Yu @MDPI

Abstract: Hardness, as a typical mechanical property of dispersion-strengthened tungsten alloy, is influenced by various coupled factors. This paper aims to identify the key factors affecting the hardness of the dispersion-strengthened tungsten alloys with different carbides and oxides as the reinforcement phase in order to enable the high-throughput prediction of hardness. A dataset was established with alloy hardness as the target variable, and the features included the content of reinforcement phase, t[...]

Our summary: This paper utilizes machine learning to predict the hardness of dispersion-strengthened tungsten alloys by analyzing key factors such as the content of reinforcement phase, grain size, and relative density. The study establishes a dataset and trains regression models to construct a hardness prediction model, with a focus on random forest, support vector regression, and XGBoost regression models. The results show that the random forest model is the most suitable for predicting hardness, with R2 values of 0.93 and 0.80 for the training and test sets, and MAE values of 22.72 and 38.37.

Arc Erosion Properties of the Ag-Cr2AlC Contact Material

Published on 2025-03-07 by Xiaochen Huang, Jinlong Ge, Zijue Zhou, Bin Chen, Feng Zhuo, Hongdi Zhang @MDPI

Abstract: This study investigates the arc performance of Ag-Cr2AlC composite materials. Spark plasma sintering method was employed to prepare the Ag-Cr2AlC composite material. A self-made arc erosion device was utilized to erode the material with different times of arc. The surface of the material was categorized into three distinct areas: the eroded center area, the eroded edge area, and the heat-affected area. After one time of arc erosion, the material exhibits a relatively flat surface with a small er[...]

Our summary: Study on arc erosion properties of Ag-Cr2AlC composite material using spark plasma sintering method and self-made arc erosion device. Surface categorized into eroded center, eroded edge, and heat-affected areas. Material decomposes and oxidizes after multiple arc erosions, forming Ag2O, Al2O3, and Cr2O3. Breakdown current value stable at 20-35 A, breakdown strength varies between 3 × 106 V/m and 6 × 106 V/m before enhancing with ageing.
