A medical device (MD) is any device that is used for medical purposes. This can include anything from simple devices like tongue depressors and Band-Aids to complex devices like pacemakers and artificial hearts. Medical devices are a regulated industry, by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in North America and by CE marking associated regulations in the European Union, in order to ensure that they are safe and effective for use.
