Water Reuse—Retrospective Study on Sustainable Future Prospects

Published on 2025-03-10 by Morteza Abbaszadegan, Absar Alum, Masaaki Kitajima, Takahiro Fujioka, Yasuhiro Matsui, Daisuke Sano, Hiroyuki Katayama @MDPI

Abstract: In recent decades, societies and economies across the globe have started to show signs of stress associated with water shortages. Meeting the sustainability benchmarks in arid and semi-arid regions has caused water reuse to be considered a viable alternate source to augment the existing water supply resources. Water reuse, resource recovery, and recycling are extensions of the concept of a circular economy that has been practiced in other fields. Globally, the U.S. has played a leadership role i[...]

Degradation and Ecotoxicity Mitigation of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate by Aeration-Assisted Cold Plasma

Published on 2025-03-08 by Sengbin Oh, Joo-Youn Nam, Youngpyo Hong, Tae-Hun Lee, Jae-Cheol Lee, Hyun-Woo Kim @MDPI

Abstract: Various advanced oxidation processes have been used to degrade perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), one of the persistent organic pollutants that dissolves in aquatic ecosystems, but these processes suffer from inherent limitations. This study proposes aeration-assisted cold plasma (CP) technology as an alternative. PFOS removal via CP treatment reached 62.5% after 1 h of exposure, with a degradation rate constant of 3.1 h−1. The detection of sulfate (SO42−) in the solut[...]

Our summary: Advanced oxidation processes have limitations in degrading PFOS in aquatic ecosystems. Aeration-assisted cold plasma technology shows promise in achieving 62.5% PFOS removal after 1 hour, with evidence of effective degradation through sulfate detection. Acute toxicity may initially increase but can be mitigated with additional exposure to reactive species from CP.

Recent Advances in Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Sports Applications

Published on 2025-03-07 by Mnica P. S. Ferreira, Ins Ferreira, Vnia Pais, Liliana Leite, Joo Bessa, Fernando Cunha, Ral Fangueiro @MDPI

Abstract: Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can convert the mechanical energy of physical activities into electricity. This is particularly useful in sports applications, where physical activity can power devices such as wearables that can provide real-time feedback on athletes’ performance or health. To work, a TENG usually needs tribopositive and tribonegative materials. Currently, the vast majority of TENGs use materials containing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) a[...]

KOH-Assisted Chemical Activation of Camelina Meal (Wild Flax) to Treat PFOA-Contaminated Wastewater

Published on 2025-03-03 by Shivangi Jha, Falguni Pattnaik, Oscar Zapata, Bishnu Acharya, Ajay K. Dalai @MDPI

Abstract: This study is constituted of the chemical activation of camelina meal (CM) biochar and the utilization of these activated carbon for the adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from water. Camelina meal, a sustainable agro-based byproduct, underwent slow pyrolysis and subsequent chemical activation with potassium carbonate (K2CO3), potassium hydroxide (KOH), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Among these chemical activating agents, KOH emerged as the one of most efficient activating agents, yieldi[...]

Rapid and Ultrasensitive Sensor for Point-of-Use Detection of Perfluorooctanoic Acid Based on Molecular Imprinted Polymer and AC Electrothermal Effect

Published on 2025-02-28 by Niloufar Amin, Jiangang Chen, Ngoc Susie Nguyen, Qiang He, John Schwartz, Jie Jayne Wu @MDPI

Abstract: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is one of the most persistent and bioaccumulative water contaminants. Sensitive, rapid, and in-field analysis is needed to ensure safe water supplies. Here, we present a single step (one shot) and rapid sensor capable of measuring PFOA at the sub-quadrillion (ppq) level, 4.5 × 10−4 ppq, within 10 s. This innovative sensor employs a synergistic combination of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-modified gold interdigitated microelectrode[...]
