Preparation and Applications—A Review

Published on 2025-10-19 by Marin Senila, Eniko Kovacs, Lacrimioara Senila @MDPI

Abstract: Zeolites are widely acknowledged as minerals with outstanding characteristics, primarily due to their complex porous structure and large specific surface area. The modification of natural and synthetic zeolites can improve their properties, making them suitable for a wider range of applications. In recent years, silver-exchanged natural zeolites have been increasingly studied because silver is known for its antimicrobial and electrical conductivity properties, which enhance their utility in vari[...]

Our summary: This review examines the characteristics and modifications of zeolites, focusing on silver-exchanged variants. It highlights the synthesis methods that enhance their properties and applications. The study also discusses the advantages, limitations, and future trends of silver-zeolite composites.

Predicting Soil Electrical Conductivity of Saturated Paste Extract Using Pedotransfer Functions in Northeastern Tunisia

Published on 2025-10-16 by Oumayma Hmidi, Feyda Srarfi, Nadhem Brahim, Paola Bambina, Giuseppe Lo Papa @MDPI

Abstract: Soil electrical conductivity is a key indicator of soil salinity and sustainability, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Accurate estimation of EC is essential for managing soil salinity and ensuring crop productivity. Five pedotransfer functions (PTFs) were developed and evaluated for predicting electrical conductivity in a saturated paste extract using soil parameters, such as particle size analysis, pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, and electrical conductiv[...]

Our summary: This study develops five pedotransfer functions (PTFs) to predict soil electrical conductivity in northeastern Tunisia. The accuracy of the PTFs was evaluated, with PTF4 achieving the highest R2 value of 0.89. The research highlights regional variations in soil salinity and the need for tailored PTFs to support sustainable soil management.

Gas Purification Technology Suitable for Space Mice Cultured in Sealed Box

Published on 2025-10-14 by Ru Yuan, Haoyuan Sun, Qian Zhang, Le Zhang, Shidong Yuan, Fangwu Liu, Tao Zhang @MDPI

Abstract: A stable atmosphere is very important for long-term life science experiments with small mammals in sealed habitats. In this study, we constructed a multi-stage, solid-state purification system to regulate and control the supply of oxygen and remove carbon dioxide, humidity, and trace contaminants in a sealed metal box. Lithium hydroxide was used as the material to absorb CO2; molecular sieves and humidity-indicating silica gel were used as dehumidification material; and activated carbon-based so[...]

Our summary: This study presents a multi-stage gas purification system designed for maintaining a stable atmosphere in sealed habitats for space mice. The system effectively regulates oxygen levels and removes carbon dioxide, humidity, and trace contaminants. Performance evaluation showed successful maintenance of critical environmental parameters during a 7-day culture test with mice.

Co-Processing Electrolytic Manganese Residue and Red Mud with Steel Slag for Enhanced Performance

Published on 2025-10-14 by Yingchun Sun, Xinglan Cui, Xiaobin Gu, Xinyue Shi, Hongxia Li, Lei Wang @MDPI

Abstract: In response to the pressing environmental challenges posed by electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) and red mud (RM), this study proposes an innovative cementitious material technology for the synergistic co-utilization of these industrial wastes. By employing steel slag (SS) as a calcium-rich skeleton, the system effectively immobilizes sulfates from EMR and alkalinity from RM, converting hazardous wastes into value-added construction materials. Through orthogonal experimentation, an optimal mix[...]

Our summary: This study introduces a cementitious material technology for co-utilizing electrolytic manganese residue and red mud with steel slag. An optimal mix ratio of 30% red mud, 20% electrolytic manganese residue, and 50% steel slag was established to achieve a compressive strength of 20.40 MPa. The process demonstrates a self-stabilizing conversion of hazardous wastes into valuable construction materials while providing environmental and economic benefits.

Effect of Low- and High-Si/Al Synthetic Zeolites on the Performance of Renovation Plasters

Published on 2025-10-14 by Joanna Styczeń, Jacek Majewski @MDPI

Abstract: The appropriate selection of renovation plaster properties is essential for ensuring the durability and effectiveness of conservation works. This study focused on the design and characterization of cement-based renovation mortars modified with synthetic zeolites with different Si/Al ratios. It was assumed that high-silica zeolites would provide more favorable mechanical and hygric performance than low-silica types. Owing to their porous structure and pozzolanic reactivity, zeolites proved to be [...]

Our summary: This study investigates the impact of synthetic zeolites with varying Si/Al ratios on cement-based renovation mortars. High-silica zeolites, particularly ZSM-5, enhance mechanical strength, durability, and moisture transport properties. The results indicate that these modifications lead to improved microstructure and effectiveness in conservation applications.
