Insights into the Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide in Zeolites ITQ-29 and 5A Based on Kinetic Measurements and Molecular Simulations

Published on 2025-07-11 by Magdy Abdelghany Elsayed, Shixue Zhou, Xiaohui Zhao, Gumawa Windu Manggada, Zhongyuan Chen, Fang Wang, Zhijuan Tang @MDPI

Abstract: Understanding the adsorption mechanism is essential for developing efficient technologies to capture carbon dioxide from industrial flue gases. In this work, laboratory measurements, density functional theory calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations were employed to study CO2 adsorption and diffusion behavior in LTA-type zeolites. The CO2 adsorption isotherms measured in zeolite 5A are best described by the Toth model. Thermodynamic analysis indicates that the adsorption process is spont[...]

Our summary: Study of CO2 adsorption and diffusion in LTA-type zeolites using laboratory measurements, DFT calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations. Thermodynamic analysis shows spontaneous and exothermic adsorption with heterogeneous interactions at Ca2+ and Na+ sites. Comparison between zeolites 5A and ITQ-29 reveals differences in adsorption energy and diffusion kinetics.

Comparative Life Cycle and Techno-Economic Assessment of Constructed Wetland, Microbial Fuel Cell, and Their Integration for Wastewater Treatment

Published on 2025-07-10 by Nicholas Miwornunyuie, Samuel O. Alamu, Guozhu Mao, Nihed Benani, James Hunter, Gbekeloluwa Oguntimein @MDPI

Abstract: This study systematically compares the environmental and economic performance of three wastewater treatment systems: constructed wetlands (CWs), microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and their integration (CW–MFC). Lab-scale units of each system were constructed using a multi-media matrix (gravel, zeolite, and granular activated carbon), composite native wetland species (Juncus effusus, Iris sp., and Typha angustifolia), carbon-based electrodes (graphite), and standard inoculum for CW and C[...]

Our summary: This study compares the environmental and economic performance of constructed wetlands, microbial fuel cells, and their integration for wastewater treatment. The integrated CW-MFC system achieved enhanced pollutant removal and bioenergy generation, while the stand-alone MFC showed higher environmental burdens. TEA results highlight CW as the most cost-effective solution.

The Incorporation of Adsorbents with Contrasting Properties into the Soil Substrate for the Removal of Multiple Pollutants in Stormwater Treatment for the Reuse of Water—A Review

Published on 2025-07-03 by Paripurnanda Loganathan, Jaya Kandasamy, Harsha Ratnaweera, Saravanamuthu Vigneswaran @MDPI

Abstract: Stormwater carries significant amounts of pollutants—including metals, microorganisms, organic micropollutants, and nutrients—from land surfaces into nearby water bodies, leading to water quality deterioration and threats to both human health and ecosystems. The removal of these contaminants is essential not only for environmental protection, but also to enable the reuse of treated water for various beneficial applications. Common treatment methods include bioretentio[...]

Our summary: Incorporation of adsorbents into soil substrate improves pollutant removal efficiency in stormwater treatment for water reuse. Dynamic filtration studies are needed to evaluate combined adsorbent systems in real stormwater conditions.

Process for converting oxygenates to distillate fuels

Patent published on the 2025-06-26 in WO under Ref WO2025136871 by UOP LLC [US] (Jeroro Eseoghene [us], Serban Manuela [us])

Abstract: A process is provided to produce increased amounts of cycloparaffin compounds in a methanol to jet fuel process by modifying the olefin oligomerization step that after hydrogenation provides the increased quantities of cycloparaffins for jet fuel. A two stage oligomerization process is employed in which an acidic catalyst such as a zeolite is in one reactor and a metal, such as nickel, on alumina catalyst is in a second reactor. The two stages may be in either order in the process. A small amoun[...]
