Comparative Life Cycle and Techno-Economic Assessment of Constructed Wetland, Microbial Fuel Cell, and Their Integration for Wastewater Treatment

Published on 2025-07-10 by Nicholas Miwornunyuie, Samuel O. Alamu, Guozhu Mao, Nihed Benani, James Hunter, Gbekeloluwa Oguntimein @MDPI

Abstract: This study systematically compares the environmental and economic performance of three wastewater treatment systems: constructed wetlands (CWs), microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and their integration (CW–MFC). Lab-scale units of each system were constructed using a multi-media matrix (gravel, zeolite, and granular activated carbon), composite native wetland species (Juncus effusus, Iris sp., and Typha angustifolia), carbon-based electrodes (graphite), and standard inoculum for CW and C[...]

Our summary: This study compares the environmental and economic performance of constructed wetlands, microbial fuel cells, and their integration for wastewater treatment. The integrated CW-MFC system achieved enhanced pollutant removal and bioenergy generation, while the stand-alone MFC showed higher environmental burdens. TEA results highlight CW as the most cost-effective solution.

The Case of Nisyros Island

Published on 2025-02-08 by Evangelos Tsiaras, Zografia Andreosatou, Aliki Kouveli, Stergios Tampekis, Frank A. Coutelieris @MDPI

Abstract: As a crucial strategy for mitigating climate change and achieving electricity independence, renewable energy sources (RESs) are gaining widespread importance. This study explores achieving electricity autonomy for Nisyros Island, Greece, through RESs. Four scenarios are evaluated, including standalone wind and photovoltaic systems, alongside hybrid options combining both. Each scenario is designed to meet the island’s electricity demands while considering economic feasibility and m[...]

Our summary: Mitigating climate change through RESs on Nisyros Island through wind and photovoltaic systems. Wind-based scenarios are the most cost-effective, with potential for electricity independence and economic benefits. Achieving EU climate goals with renewable energy for Nisyros.

A Sustainable Approach

Published on 2025-02-07 by Dmaris Nez-Gmez, Alejandro Andy Maci-Vzquez, Carlos Gimnez-Valero, Juan Jos Martnez-Nicols, Pilar Legua, Pablo Melgarejo @MDPI

Abstract: The Mediterranean region faces significant water scarcity, a challenge intensified by climate change, impacting both agricultural productivity and water quality. High sodium levels in irrigation water compromise soil structure, leading to reduced crop yields and economic strain. This study investigates the use of sustainable adsorbents derived from agricultural residues (almond shell, eggshell, and pumice) for the removal of sodium from irrigation water. These materials, widely available in the [...]

Our summary: Study investigates biosorbents for sodium removal from irrigation water in Mediterranean region. Central Composite Rotational Design used to optimize parameters. Adsorption adheres to pseudo-second order model. Biowaste-derived adsorbents show potential for sustainable agriculture.
