Hydroponique

Effects of Polypropylene Microplastics and Copper Contamination on Rice Seedling Growth

Published on 2026-02-02 by Ziwen Hao, Steven Xu, Siquan Huang, Lin Wang @MDPI

Abstract: This study investigates the effects of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) and copper (Cu), applied individually and in combination, on the growth (root and shoot length, fresh and dry biomass), peroxidase (POD) activity, and Cu accumulation of rice seedlings. A hydroponic experiment was conducted with four treatments: control (CK), PP, Cu, and PP+Cu. Exposure to PP-MPs slightly promoted seedling growth, whereas Cu markedly inhibited growth and induced chlorosis. Compared with Cu alone, co-expo[...]

Our summary: This study examines the effects of polypropylene microplastics and copper on rice seedling growth. Exposure to microplastics promoted growth slightly, while copper inhibited it and caused chlorosis. Effects of Brackish Water Irrigation on Salt Transport in Saline-Alkali Peat–Perlite Substrates and Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Growth

Published on 2026-02-01 by Wendong Zhang, Caiyu Wang, Yiman Li, Qinghai He @MDPI

Abstract: Amid global freshwater scarcity and soil salinization, brackish irrigation is a potential alternative, yet its effects under low-leaching soilless systems remain unclear. We tested brackish irrigation (30 mmol L−1 NaCl; EC ≈ 4.8 dS m−1, including fertilizer) on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in peat–perlite substrates with non-saline (CK), mildly saline (M), and moderately–severely saline (S) initial salinity. Substrate moi[...]

Our summary: Brackish irrigation affects salt transport in saline-alkali peat-perlite substrates. Lettuce growth is minimally impacted under non-saline and mildly saline conditions but significantly reduced in moderately-severely saline environments. The study highlights the need for tailored irrigation strategies based on initial salinity levels.
