Within seconds, this installs remotely on WordPress servers a just-for-you complete environment that will be erased automatically when you quit the tool. You can install any plugin and even test special versions of WordPress in combinaison with PHP versions. Great for any learning, development, quick compatibility check, or basic staging replacement.
Your WordPress Playground Settings
It is strongly recommended to use this tool on a big screen
It will open in a new Tab.
Important: all your work done on the WordPress Playground window will be erased each time you refresh your browser or leave that page (see chapter bellow for several means to save your work).
First Time WordPress Users 8 Tips
If you have used our launcher tool, you will have a seamless window tab, with just the normal view you’d get when you first install WordPress.
- Once loaded, switch between the front and the backend view by clicking “My WordPress Website” on the top left. With this tool, you have the admin role (and associated rights)
- On the backend side, most is accessible via the left menu. Start by customizing a bit your site, like its name, tagline or language: Settings > General. This can easily be changed or updated later
- Write your first blog article: Posts > Add New Post and save and publish it with “Publish” on the top right
- upload your first media picture Media > Add new Media File
- Return to the previously written first blog post Posts > All Posts > Edit and on the right column Set the “Featured Image” and chose the previously uploaded image (you could have done that here directly). Go to the font view and admire your art.
- Change the Theme: Appearance > Themes > Add New Theme. You can preview and have details before installing them
- customize your theme: depending on the theme, its options may be via a dedicated menu on the left or via Appearances > Theme > Customize
- Install your first plugins: the ability to extend the features almost limitless through plugins, frequently for free, is a big part of WordPress phenomenal success. We recommend at least to install a backup plugin and a SEO plugin. Go to Plugins> Add New Plugin and on the top right search box enter. You will have a big temptation to install a lot of them.
Congrats, you are now ready to start a Product Design or Innovation related original blog: find a hosting company and a domain name, or the wordpress.com all in one hosting solutions. Send us a message here when done.
Advanced WordPress Users Tips
- Create a child theme and edit it to have your very own design.
- Create your PHP code to have your own features by editing functions.php or, better, using a plugin to add code snippet … sky is the limit
- The seamless window was created for first time users not to be confused by an additional top headline that is not in the standard WordPress install. Edit the URL top browser URL created by our tool and remove “&mode=seamless” at the right end and reload the page. You will now have the full options of the Playground tools. We recommend to open the left panel by the top left icon and test the upload/download .zip and the various blueprints that users have created for different predefined scenarii.
Expert WordPress Users Tips
- Explore the WordPress Playground: you can link to your own GitHub account and load or save your site or modifications or test there
- By installing the WordPress “Playground” Plugin, you can test your existing WordPress on this playground. Note that this plugin is in its development stage.
WordPress PlayGround Restrictions
- WordPress Playground is temporary by design: all database changes and uploads will be gone when you refresh or change the main browser page. To avoid losing your work here, either:
- use the default WordPress mechanism: “Import” or “Export” via the “Tools” option on the left menu)
- install a backup plugin and download the produced file.
- export/import your work as a ZIP file with the two arrows on the top right of the WordPress Playground banner
- or enable storage in the browser/device via the “Save” button in the UI.
- You can not access the root directory (many methods could normally achieve this, simplest by installing a plugin managing files and directories) so as some other low level interactions (WP-CLI partially …).
- Any click on a link or javascript reloading the page at the top level (target=”_top”) will exit the iframe and therefore the Playground.
