Artisans engaged in upcycling processes, transforming waste materials into valuable products.

The term ‘upcycling’ was first coined in 1994 by German engineer Reiner Pilz in an interview with journalist Thornton Kay. Pilz contrasted it with ‘down-cycling,’ where materials are converted into something of lesser quality. He described upcycling as the process where old products are given more value, not less, highlighting the need for a new perspective on waste materials.

The term ‘upcycling’ was introduced to the public sphere by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH during a 1994 interview published in Salvo, a UK architectural salvage magazine. Journalist Thornton Kay was discussing the European Union’s new demolition waste directive when Pilz articulated a crucial distinction. He criticized conventional recycling, which he termed ‘down-cycling,’ for breaking down materials like bricks into rubble, thereby reducing their inherent value. Pilz argued, ‘I call it down-cycling. They smash bricks, they smash everything. What we need is up-cycling, where old products are given more value, not less.’

This conceptualization marked a significant shift in thinking about waste. Before this, reuse and recycling were often conflated, with little emphasis on the quality or value of the resulting product. Pilz’s idea introduced a hierarchy into the reuse process. It championed a creative and intelligent approach to waste, viewing discarded items not as refuse to be managed, but as raw materials for creating new products of higher quality or environmental value. This perspective laid the groundwork for future thought leaders and designers to build upon, fundamentally altering the conversation around sustainability and resource management.
