This accounts for the fact that one reusable cup replaces many disposable ones. The definition must be precise and include aspects of performance, quantity, and duration. It answers the questions: ‘What function does the product provide?’, ‘How much of that function?’, ‘For how long?’, and ‘To what quality standard?’. A poorly defined functional unit can introduce significant bias into an LCA study, leading to misleading conclusions. It is established during the ‘Goal and Scope Definition’ phase and directly influences the system boundaries and the data collected in the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) phase.
