Real-Time 0.89 THz Terahertz Imaging with High-Electron-Mobility Transistor Detector and Hydrogen Cyanide Laser for Non-Destructive Nut Detection

On 2025-02-04 by Nu Zhang, Haiqing Liu, Huihui Yan, Hongbei Wang, Jiaxing Xie, Yinxian Jie, Damao Yao @MDPI

Abstract: We present a method for real-time terahertz imaging that employs a hydrogen cyanide (HCN) laser as a terahertz source at 0.89 THz and an AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) terahertz detector as a camera. We developed an HCN laser and constructed a transmission imaging system based on it. This combination utilizes a high-power HCN laser with a highly sensitive terahertz detector, enabling practical applications of real-time terahertz imaging. A resolution test plane was produced t[...]

Aluminum–Silica Core–Shell Nanoparticles via Nonthermal Plasma Synthesis

On 2025-02-04 by Thomas Cameron, Bailey Klause, Kristine Q. Loh, Uwe R. Kortshagen @MDPI

Abstract: Aluminum nanoparticles (Al NPs) are interesting for energetic and plasmonic applications due to their enhanced size-dependent properties. Passivating the surface of these particles is necessary to avoid forming a native oxide layer, which can degrade energetic and optical characteristics. This work utilized a radiofrequency (RF)-driven capacitively coupled argon/hydrogen plasma to form surface-modified Al NPs from aluminum trichloride (AlCl3) vapor and 5% silane in argon (dilute SiH4). Varying t[...]

AI summary: Nonthermal plasma synthesis of aluminum-silica core-shell nanoparticles. Passivation of surface prevents oxide layer formation. Variable morphologies formed based on plasma parameters. Core-shell particles show increased oxidation temperature compared to pure aluminum.

The Effect of Contraction–Expansion Nozzle on High-Temperature Shock Tube Flow

On 2025-02-04 by Junmou Shen, Dapeng Yao, Zhongjie Shao, Feng Ji, Xing Chen, Wei Chen, Jianwei Li @MDPI

Abstract: To achieve higher enthalpy and pressure, the technique of variable cross-section drive is effectively combined with the heating of light gas to enhance the intensity of the incident shock wave. A study was conducted to predict the impact of variable cross-sections on the performance of high-temperature shock tube flow using a shock tube with a 2.6:1 diameter ratio between the driver and driven sections. The driver section was filled with a helium–argon gas mixture (mass ratio of 1:[...]

AI summary: Impact of variable cross-sections on high-temperature shock tube flow was studied using a contraction-expansion nozzle. Results showed acceleration of incident shock, formation of fan-shaped wavefront, and decrease in intensity as throat size decreased. High-temperature flow behavior accurately captured through numerical simulations.

Defect Tailoring in HfO2/Si Films upon Post-Deposition Annealing and Ultraviolet Irradiation

On 2025-02-04 by Silvestre Salas-Rodríguez, Fernanda I. González-Moreno, Rosa M. Woo-García, Agustín L. Herrera-May, Francisco López-Huerta, Felipe Caballero-Briones @MDPI

Abstract: In the present work, a study of the structural defects in HfO2 thin films deposited by dip-coating on p-type silicon substrates treated under different conditions, such as air-annealing, ultraviolet irradiation, and simultaneous annealing–UV irradiation, is presented. HfO2 thin films were analyzed by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, optical fluorescence, atomic force microscopy, and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance. Films treated at 200 °C and 350 &[...]

Involvement in Cancer Development and Potential Druggability

On 2025-02-04 by Catarina Pimpão, Inês V. da Silva, Graça Soveral @MDPI

Abstract: Aquaporins (AQPs) are transmembrane proteins that facilitate the transport of water and small solutes, including glycerol, hydrogen peroxide and ions, across cell membranes. Beyond their established physiological roles in water regulation and metabolic processes, AQPs also exhibit receptor-like signaling activities in cancer-associated signaling pathways, integrating the dual roles of transporters and receptors, hence functioning as transceptors. This dual functionality underpins their critical [...]

Hydrogen Production from Renewable and Non-Renewable Sources with a Focus on Bio-Hydrogen from Giant reed (Arundo donax L.), a Review

On 2025-02-04 by Ciro Vasmara, Stefania Galletti, Stefano Cianchetta, Enrico Ceotto @MDPI

Abstract: In the last five years, the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier has received rising attention because it can be used in internal combustion and jet engines, and it can even generate electricity in fuel cells. The scope of this work was to critically review the methods of H2 production from renewable and non-renewable sources, with a focus on bio-H2 production from the perennial grass giant reed (Arundo donax L.) due to its outstanding biomass yield. This lignocellulosic biomass appears as a pro[...]
