Topology Optimization and Testing of Connecting Rod Based on Static and Dynamic Analyses

Published on 2025-02-16 by Mahalingam Nainaragaram Ramasamy, Aleš Slíva, Prasath Govindaraj, Akash Nag @MDPI

Abstract: This research article outlines our aim to perform topology optimization (TO) by reducing the mass of the connecting rod of an internal combustion engine based on static structural and dynamic analyses. The basic components of an internal combustion engine like the connecting rods, pistons, crankshaft, and cylinder liners were designed using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2025. Using topology optimization, we aimed to achieve lesser maximum von Mises stress during static structural analysis and m[...]

Our summary: Aim to reduce mass of connecting rod through topology optimization based on static and dynamic analyses, designed internal combustion engine components using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2025, achieved mass reduction and reduced maximum von Mises stress through ANSYS Discovery software.

Comparing the Effects of Erosion and Accretion Along the Coast of Pontchartrain Lake and New Orleans in the United States of America

Published on 2025-02-14 by Silvia V. González Rodríguez, Vicente Negro Valdecantos, José María del Campo, Vanessa Torrodero Numpaque @MDPI

Abstract: This research examines the transformation of the Lake Pontchartrain coastal landscape, including the New Orleans shoreline. The paper addresses the critical need to understand long-term environmental change through a comprehensive geospatial analysis of historical cartographic representations. The study employs a methodology involving three key steps: (1) georeferencing maps using QGis v. 3.4.8., (2) vectorization using AutoCAD v. 2013, and (3) comparative spatial analysis to quantify coastal mo[...]

Our summary: This research compares erosion and accretion effects along the coast of Lake Pontchartrain and New Orleans in the USA. It utilizes georeferencing, vectorization, and spatial analysis to quantify morphological changes. The results show significant erosion in Lake Pontchartrain and land reclamation in New Orleans, highlighting the impact of natural and anthropogenic processes on coastal landscapes.

Development of a Customized 3D Printed Orthosis for Non-Surgical Treatment of Olecranon Elbow Fractures

Published on 2025-02-11 by Dante Rodriguez, Catherine Boggio, Melany Cama, Joao Torres, Gianella Ccama, Emilio Ochoa, Andoni R. Molina @MDPI

Abstract: Elbow injuries are the second most common upper extremity fractures and often require invasive and costly surgical treatments. To explore a non-surgical alternative, we present the development and evaluation of a custom 3D-printed static orthosis made from polylactic acid (PLA) designed using 3D scanning, CAD software-based modeling and material characterization, showing promise for broader application in similar elbow injuries.[...]

An Improved Methodology to Locate Faults in Onshore Wind Farm Collector Systems

Published on 2025-02-03 by Moisés Davi, Alailton Júnior, Caio Grilo, Talita Cunha, Leonardo Lessa, Mário Oleskovicz, Denis Coury @MDPI

Abstract: This paper explores the growing integration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) into power systems and their effects on fault diagnosis strategies. Notably, the technical literature lacks assessments of the impacts and proposals for solutions for phasor-based fault location tasks, considering faults occurring within wind power plants, i.e., in their collector systems. In this context, this study evaluates the performance of six state-of-the-art phasor-based fault location methods, which are teste[...]

Our summary: Improved fault location methodology tested in wind farm simulations. Evaluates performance of six state-of-the-art methods. Achieves substantial reduction in error compared to conventional methods. Maintains low fault location errors across collector busbars.

Numerical Analysis of Gas Flow Distribution Characteristics in a 5 kW Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell Stack

Published on 2025-01-29 by Szcz??niak, Martsinchyk, Milewski, Shuhayeu, Dybinski, Sie?ko, Xing @MDPI

Abstract: This work presents an advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a 5 kW molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) stack intended to provide a broad analysis and deliver improved design through optimizing flow distribution. The goal is to provide a variant analysis of flow distribution in the internal channels through the CFD model. SolidWorks was used to design the MCFC stack, and SOLIDWORKS® Flow Simulation was utilized to model the flow distribution inside the stack. The simulate[...]

Effect of Infill Density on the Mechanical Properties of Natural Peek Processed by Additive Manufacturing

Published on 2025-01-27 by Efrén Vázquez-Silva, Jonnathan Andrés Pintado-Pintado, Freddy Patricio Moncayo-Matute, Paúl Bolívar Torres-Jara, Diana Patricia Moya-Loaiza @MDPI

Abstract: In the present investigation, the mechanical properties of natural polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK), processed by additive manufacturing applying fused deposition modeling (FDM) with three different infill densities, are investigated. Mechanical characterization was performed through destructive testing. Specimens were designed in CAD software and printed with controlled infill densities of 40%, 70%, and 100%, using a rectilinear pattern. The results showed that increased infill density improves me[...]
