Environmental Impact Assessment of Toys Toward Sustainable Toy Production and Consumption in Japan

Published on 2025-03-07 by Yuina Yamane, Chihiro Kayo @MDPI

Abstract: Japan’s toy market is the third largest in the world. However, the actual status of use and environmental impact of toys have not been fully studied. This study analyzes the environmental effects of wooden and plastic toys, considering their lifespan and disposal methods. A web-based survey of 1000 parents was conducted to determine the average lifespan and disposal method of toys. Additionally, a life cycle assessment was utilized to evaluate the environmental impact of common woo[...]

Our summary: Study on environmental impact of wooden and plastic toys in Japan, comparing lifespan and disposal methods. Results show wooden toys have longer lifespan and lower environmental impact in many categories. Switching to wooden toys could reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly.

A Review of Life Cycle Assessment-Based Waste Tire Recycling Technologies and Future Trends

Published on 2025-03-04 by Qingzi Zhao, Yezi Wu, Junqing Xu, Junshi Xu, Haochen Zhu, Wenzhi He, Guangming Li @MDPI

Abstract: Waste tires (WTs) pose significant environmental challenges due to their massive volume, with millions of tons generated globally each year. Improper disposal methods, such as illegal burning, further aggravate these issues by releasing substantial quantities of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and toxic pollutants into the atmosphere. To mitigate these impacts, the adoption of environmentally friendly resource recovery technologies and a thorough evaluation of their environmental benefits are crucial. A[...]

Our summary: This research reviews LCA-based analyses of WT recycling technologies, evaluating key pathways like pyrolysis and energy recovery for their carbon emissions and reduction opportunities. Feasible recommendations and future trends are proposed to advance WT resource recovery.

Life Cycle Assessment for Sustainable Wall Systems

Published on 2025-03-03 by Arthur Ferreira de Araujo, Lucas Rosse Caldas, Nicole Pagan Hasparyk, Romildo Dias Toledo Filho @MDPI

Abstract: This study evaluates the carbon footprint of three bio-concrete families—wood (WBC), bamboo (BBC), and rice husk (RHBC)—and their application in wall components (as blocks and as boards). A cradle-to-grave, carbon-focused Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was used to compare these bio-concretes to conventional masonry and industrialized light-framing solutions. Each bio-concrete family incorporated biomass volumetric fractions of 40%, 45%, and 50%, using a ternary cementiti[...]

Our summary: This study evaluates the carbon footprint of three bio-concrete families (WBC, BBC, and RHBC) and their application in wall components. The results show significantly low or negative balance of emissions, emphasizing the importance of bio-concrete durability for maximizing biogenic carbon storage. Innovative materials offer a sustainable portfolio for designers, builders, and AECO professionals.
