A circular economy is an industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design. In a circular economy, waste and pollution are designed out of the system, and resources are kept in use for as long as possible. The circular economy is based on three principles:

- Conserver les produits et matériaux en usage
- Régénérer les systèmes naturels
Elle remplace le modèle d'économie traditionnelle linéaire "prendre, fabriquer, jeter" en fin de vie par un modèle conçu pour maintenir les ressources et alimenter l'activité économique le plus longtemps possible.
