Deep Harmony Every Day: Is it Possible?

Presented by Dr Rachael Jacobs, School of Education

Harmony Day is celebrated in schools across the country, often with food fairs, fashion parades, concerts and performances. These celebrations of multiculturalism create a wonderful festival atmosphere for the day, but our challenge as educators is to go beyond the food and fashion to teaching challenging lessons about ways to end racism in our society. Overseas, March 21st is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, a United Nations sanctioned day where we examine the root causes of racism and work to eliminate it. This professional learning session explores ways that schools can engage in learning around racial justice, while celebrating the myriads of cultures that deserve to thrive in our community. Classroom activities and resources will be shared that can help move our classrooms towards deeper, anti-racist conversations which can bring about harmony every day.

Suitable for: primary and secondary school teachers, support staff, researchers, educational administrators and initial teacher education students.
