Enhancement of Polypropylene Bonding Through Plasma–Ultrasonic Treatment

Published on 2025-03-10 by Hui Wang, Chuhao Yang, Limei He, Binbin Yu, Xiaobin Zhao, Zongbin Huang @MDPI

Abstract: In response to the issue of the insufficient adhesion strength of polypropylene materials, a plasma–ultrasonic treatment is proposed. Plasma treatment is first conducted to activate the polypropylene adherends, and then ultrasonic vibration is applied to the adhesive to facilitate the interface contact, enhancing the bonding performance of polypropylene. The shear strength of the test specimens was assessed using single-lap shear tests. The bonding samples were characterized by sca[...]

Our summary: Enhancement of polypropylene bonding through plasma-ultrasonic treatment. Plasma treatment activates polypropylene adherends, followed by ultrasonic vibration to facilitate interface contact and enhance bonding performance. Results show a significant increase in shear strength and bonding energy, providing a new idea for polymer bonding studies.

Evaluation of Thermal Aging Susceptibility of Recycled Waste Plastic Aggregates (Low-Density Polyethylene, High-Density Polyethylene, and Polypropylene) in Recycled Asphalt Pavement Mixtures

Published on 2025-03-10 by Yeong-Min Kim, Kyungnam Kim @MDPI

Abstract: The increasing demand for sustainable road construction materials necessitates innovative solutions to overcome the challenges of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP), including aged binder brittleness, reduced flexibility, and durability concerns. Waste Plastic Aggregates (WPA) offer a promising alternative; however, their thermal aging behavior and interactions with RAP remain insufficiently understood. This study evaluates the performance of RAP-based asphalt mixtures, incorporating three types of[...]

Our summary: Evaluation of thermal aging susceptibility of recycled waste plastic aggregates in recycled asphalt pavement mixtures under varying conditions to enhance durability and mechanical properties. Incorporating WPA and bio-oil significantly improves Marshall Stability, ITS, fatigue life, and high-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures, offering sustainable solutions for modern infrastructure.

Mechanical Recycling of Crosslinked High-Density Polyethylene (xHDPE)

Published on 2025-03-10 by Hibal Ahmad, Denis Rodrigue @MDPI

Abstract: This study introduces a mechanical recycling technique for crosslinked high-density polyethylene (xHDPE) using cryogenic pulverization and compression molding. This method is shown to effectively transform xHDPE into valuable fillers for recycled HDPE (rHDPE(B)) sourced from recycled bottles using different concentrations (15–60%) and particle sizes (0–250 µm, 250–500 µm, and 500–1000 µm). In partic[...]

Our summary: Study introduces mechanical recycling technique for crosslinked high-density polyethylene (xHDPE) using cryogenic pulverization and compression molding. Method effectively transforms xHDPE into valuable fillers for recycled HDPE (rHDPE(B)) with different concentrations and particle sizes. Recycling method reduces gel content, improves interfacial adhesion, and enhances thermal stability of r-xHDPE samples.

Challenges and Opportunities

Published on 2025-03-09 by Antreas Kantaros, Meropi Katsantoni, Theodore Ganetsos, Nicolae Petrescu @MDPI

Abstract: The evolution of thermoplastic materials has played a critical role in advancing high-speed Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing technologies. This study explores the performance and challenges associated with next-generation thermoplastics specifically designed for high-speed printing, such as high-speed PLA, ABS, and PETG, in comparison to conventional materials. A systematic analysis was conducted to evaluate the key parameters, including the mechan[...]

Emission Integral Effect on Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Measurements Made Using Mid-Infrared Passive Spectroscopic Imaging

Published on 2025-03-08 by Daichi Anabuki, Shiori Tahara, Hibiki Yano, Akira Nishiyama, Kenji Wada, Akiko Nishimura, Ichiro Ishimaru @MDPI

Abstract: Living bodies emit mid-infrared light (wavelength band centered at approximately 10 µm) with a temperature-dependent intensity. Several studies have shown the possibility of measuring blood glucose levels using the mid-infrared emission of living bodies, and we have demonstrated non-invasive blood glucose measurements through distant wrist measurements (wavelength 8–14 µm) by mid-infrared passive spectroscopic imaging. However, it is not clear why blood [...]

Our summary: Living bodies emit mid-infrared light with a temperature-dependent intensity, enabling non-invasive blood glucose measurements through distant wrist measurements. The emission integral effect underpins changes in emission intensity with substance thickness and absorption coefficient, offering innovative solutions for measuring various substances from a distance.
